Chromium (VI) – Free Thermal Insulation

A Safer, Sustainable Solution for High-Temperature Applications

The European Commission is progressing toward new REACH restrictions on Chromium (VI) substances, expected to take effect around 2027. This shift will directly limit the use of Chromium (VI) in industry, making safe alternatives increasingly important.

Padtex Solution: Chromium (VI)-Free Insulation

Padtex has developed a calcium-free thermal insulation system engineered to eliminate one of the main causes of Chromium (VI) formation.
By removing calcium-based compounds, Padtex insulation prevents the oxidation pathway that generates Cr(VI)—even under extreme temperatures.

Key Benefits

  • Chromium (VI)-free
  • Prevents formation of Cr(VI) at high temperatures
  • Safer for workers and the environment
  • Compliant with upcoming REACH regulatory changes

How Chromium (VI) Forms in High-Temperature Environments

Chromium (VI), or hexavalent chromium, is a highly toxic form of chromium that can appear in yellow, orange, red, or purple compounds. It is known for serious health and environmental risks, and its use is being progressively restricted worldwide.

In high-temperature environments (above 400 °C), hexavalent chromium can form when:

  • Stainless steels (containing ≥12% Cr) are exposed to heat, and
  • Calcium-based materials are present, which promote oxidation.

This reaction can occur in furnaces, exhaust systems, and other industrial equipment, potentially releasing harmful Chromium (VI).
